N is for Newness

Whether or not Newness is actually a real world, I think it’s a fantastic one.

I’m on a constant quest for Newness. Sometimes it gets me into trouble or causes me to change too quickly, but at others it provides a great frame through which to see the world in a continuously fresh and exciting light.

Today I went to buy ‘newborn baby’ gifts for two friends of mine. What a perfect example of Newness. For both couples, their life is about to be transformed. Their perspectives, challenges and responsibilities will shift unrecognisably. And I have no doubt that it will be the most amazing and rewarding step in their life so far.

For me, Newness is inspiring me to think about my 6 month, 1 year and 5 year plans. To reflect on how I can bring change, opportunity and novelty into my life, whether in big ways or small. The quest for Newness motivates me to keep seeking and developing; the challenge of course is to retain focus and not become flippant or give up on important things in life that need persistence.

So where can you find Newness?

The best news is that you can find it anywhere, every day, and in all the places and people that you usually interact with. But how? Because when you’re actively looking for Newness you’ll see a nuance that you’d never noticed in someone before; you’ll look up and be surprised by a blossom tree that you walk past each day without having realised how tall it grows; or you’ll ask a question of someone you know well and be deeply surprised by their answer.

Try to find something new to appreciate and value every day. If you’re ever feeling down, uninspired or as if you’re caught on a treadmill, Newness will give you a boost. It should snap you out of your doldrums enough to feel re-energised and refreshed in your life.

You don’t need to change what you’re doing; just adapt the way you’re looking.

And don’t forget to remember the old. A wonderful mix of newness and nostalgia can give you a positive glow about what’s happened in the past and a fiery fervour for what’s to come in the future.

Good luck.

  1. Love this blog. It is beautiful. And I like the concept of newness in your writing today. I love people watching also. I take my paper and pen wherever I go, resorting to writing on my hand if I have no paper. It helps me with my memory. Great blog.. I will be back.
